Optimizing your website for the search engines is important and there are numerous ways to do this and lots of aspects you have to consider. In fact, SEO is an ongoing process to keep the search engines’ crawlers interested. You can take your time to do this once your website is up. We will give you some crucial SEO tips to create a Search Engine Friendly website and get you on the first few pages. Your chosen keywords are important here. We will talk about Keyword Research in another section of this website.

Setting up your Website

If you are starting a business online you are going to need a website where you are going to sell your product, service or where you want to promote other people’s products or services (affiliate programs for commission). It is not very easy to find a Niche Market these days that hasn’t already have lots of competition, but once you decide what to go for the first few steps are very (if not the most) important. You could for example check Google Hottrends or Ebay Pulse to find what’s hot and what people are looking for. Choosing the right URL is the first important step for a successful website. The next would be to add unique content to your site. The search engines love unique content and best would be to add new content regularly. When your website is up and running it’s time to promote your website to generate Website Traffic. Now it’s a question of patience and a bit of effort.

Let’s take it step by step in detail.

Choosing the Perfect URL or Domain name for your Website

The best URL is one that tells people exactly what your website is about. Choose the right keywords for the website title and description to follow the URL you have chosen. For example the URL InternetAdsCenter.com is a website where website owners or companies can submit an Internet Ad Classified or Website Link to promote their website and generate more traffic. The URL tells you exactly what you can find on the site. Relevance is key here. In other words, if your name would be John Doodle and you create your website johndoodle.com which is about fishing it’s going to be a lot harder to reach the first pages of the search engines and to increase pagerank (more about pagerank later).

Try avoid characters like “-” (dash or minus) in your URL and forget about “_” (underscore). That will ofcourse limit the choices of URLs that are still free, but just be creative. You will find a suitable URL for your specific website.

Domain Name Registration and Webhosting

The easiest way to find out if a URL is free or not is to visit a Webhosting website. There is always a box where you can enter a URL to check this. A recommended webhost (announced No.1 in 2009 and 2010) with a large package of extras and options (like WordPress, eCommerce shopping carts, etc.) included in the package, unlimited diskspace and one domain name free for life is Justhost. There is a little trick to get 50% off at Justhost. Take a few steps into signing up and then close the browser. A question pops up if you really want to close the site pops up. Cancel and follow instructions in the chatbox that pops up after. We never told you this by the way… Instructions on where to upload your files or how to install for example WordPress will follow once you signed up.

Creating a Website

Making a website can be easy or you can put a lot of time into designing one yourself with software like Adobe Dreamweaver or Microsoft Frontpage. The easy way is to use a script like WordPress (free at most webhosts) or to find free website templates on the internet. Shopping cart scripts are provided by the webhost aswell sometimes if you want to start an online shop. Numerous possibilities depending on what you want to do with your website. Let’s not get into this to deep, because We cannot make that choice for you.

Content and Keywords for your Website

As mentioned above choosing a good URL is crucial for a successful website. It should contain at least one keyword for your Niche or subject you want to provide information or products for. Every website also has a title embedded in the html or php code, aswell as a site description. These should contain the keyword(s) used for the URL and similar or related keywords. By opening the index.html or index.php file in the root of your website folder or by viewing the page source of a website it should look something like this:

Title:
meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=iso-8859-1″;
<title>put a relevant title with your keywords here</title>

Desritpion:
<META NAME=”DESCRIPTION” CONTENT=”put a relevant description using your keywords here”>

Make sure that the first paragraph header on the main page also contains the relevant keywords of your choice. The first paragraph should definately contain what the website is about to make the visitor curious and want to read more, again using a few relevant keywords. More about keywords and keyword research later.

As you can imagine it wold be a good idea to make a website about something you know a lot about or something you want to know more about. This makes it a lot easier to keep adding content to your website, because of your motivation. The visitor should more or less get the feeling your are the expert on the subject your website is about. A nice addition is always other people’s reviews or opinion and ofcourse your own reviews about similar products or websites.

Create several pages people can go to from you main page with relevant and unique content about specifics you think people should know.

So much for the first steps.

Internal Website Optimization

Internal website optimization is all about keywords in website title, meta tags, website description, page headers and page content. Internal Optimization means on-page optimization that you should take into consideration while writing your internal web pages. the nice thing is you have complete control over this. It has a major effect on the search engines (how important they find your website) and ads relevancy if you have Adsense ads on your site.

The Meta Tags and Keywords

Meta Keywords

They do not have a huge impact, but they DO have impact the listing of your website in the search engines. It’s recommended not to leave this part of your page blank. Always try to make it as easy as possible for the crawlers to understand your website. Create your web page using Meta keywords. If there is limited content on your webpage, the search engine crawlers will pick up the Meta Tags. Search on Google for the high ranking websites for the keyword you have in mind. These websites will give you a good idea about what to include in Meta Tags.

Meta Description
What you put in the description meta tag will appear as description right after the Title Text that links to your page in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERP). This description meta tag is quite important, as it has direct impact over the Click Through Rate (CTR) of your link in the SERPs that leads to your website. It makes a big difference on how much traffic you will get from search engines. Write a description that attracts the kind of traffic you want for your website.

Website Title Tag

The keywords that appear in the title tag of HTML Source code are important for the Search Engines. The website title has a good impact on relevancy of your website. Best would be to use a series of low competition keywords for the title text and let those keywords appear in the tect content of your main page.

The title text appears in the SERPs as title link to your website. In other words, you can say this very line can determine the CTR of your website link listed in SERPs. How you design your title is entirely in your hands. If you are optimizing it for more traffic, you will not want your title to read as it was written for Search Engine crawlers. Your website title should be to the point and as short as possible, but try to catch your target visitors’ attention with it.

Use Headings containing your Keywords

Its essential to mark the main headline of your webpage with <H1> tags and subheadings with <H2> and <H3> tags, and so on. Even bold text helps. This is because headings tell visitors and search engines what your content is about, so indicate the most important elements of your website. It is important to use relevant keywords in headings and sub headings as these have a high impact on search engine rankings, especially when you sort them by relevancy. This has an equally good impact on the ads appearing on your web page if you use Adsense ads on your site. Headings give importance to the actual content on your website pages.

Good headings will beat your competition and increase traffic.

Use Relevant Keywords in the page content

Besides hosting useful and unique content on your web pages, it is important to include keywords at the beginning and end of a paragraph or article. This helps search engines determine what the website or particular page is about. Crawlers go from website title to meta description, then meta keywords, H1 headings, H2 and H3 headings. After that the website will be checked for the unique and relevant content. Good use of keywords makes your website more important than other websites. Too much content may result in the fact that you will probably use other irrelevant keywords without you knowing it. In other words, don’t make your web pages with too much content, as it might mislead crawlers to get the wrong idea of what your website is about, resulting in a possible decrease in ranking. Do not spam your content with the same or similar keywords, but use them wisely. Around every 50 to 75 words a relevant keyword or keyword string is good.

Use Internal Links in your Content

Internal links are picked up by the search engines as long as you link relevant keywords or strings to the other pages of your website. Your link partners will not link all the pages of your website, so it’s important that your own content hyperlinks to your other pages and tell the crawlers what your pages are about. Also suggesting related links, to for example related articles, to the visitor will also increase the page views of your website and te search engines will see the importance of your website and increase your ranking.

A website must interlink its pages. This can be done by displaying related articles or linking to pages with proper anchor text. This helps increase the importance of most web pages. Even a simple navigation bar with “sponsored links” to relevant websites can help.

External Website Optimization

Now we have covered the Internal Website Optimization it is time to explain the External Website Optimization. External Optimization deals with the aspects of promoting your website over the internet. This part of optimization influences the importance of your website and thus the search engines ranking. This part of SEO takes quite a lot of time and you have only limited control over it sometimes.

Use Relevant Anchor text

Relevant Keywords in anchor text enhance the relevance of the target page. Every page of your website should be made relevant and important for the search engines through optimized anchor text containing important keywords, again explaining what the website is about.

Request link partners to link to your website with an anchor text you specify. Don’t force them though. Important keywords in the anchor text can make a big difference in the final search engines ranking as well as the relevance of Adsense ads on your website. The search engines also more or less measure the importance of your website through the anchor text, both on your own website and on the external websites linking to your website. The more important your website is to the search engines, the higher your website’s page rank will be.

Promoting your Website

Link exchange, writing articles, commenting on relevant high ranked blogs, replying on relevant forums…all part of External SEO Optimization. Where possible you should use Anchored text linking to your website using the right keywords. It will take some time before the search engines pick up all the Anchored text links to your site, so do not get demotivated…keep going.
